Farmer Eric Simpson at his farm outside of Atlanta for Modern Farmer Magazine. Modern Farmer is a new quarterly with a bunch of epic people (S/O to Ayanna). This assignment was a breath of fresh air in the middle of a bunch of crazy (but still fun) shoots. The weather was good despite what the forecast said and it was just me and a camera and a subject. No lights, no reflectors or weird requirements. As much time as I needed. So so nice. I also updated the client work section of my website with stuff from the past few months. Give it a look!
Kerry Noonan, an organic farmer in Paonia, Colorado for Bloomberg Businessweek. Full story here.
Nobody ever shouts out their assistants anymore but I’m going to make it cool again. Thanks to my dear friend Evan who isn’t a photographer but can hold a damn good reflector and drove that rented chevy aveo like he was travis pastrana on a rally course.
outtake from last weekends AARP shoot.
**** Seriously people?!!! is tumblr jacking with your colors too?!?!?*********
On Saturday I fulfilled my lifelong dream of working for Michael Wichita over at AARP. This photo had nothing to do with the assigned subject matter (granny that designed an iPad app), it was taken during the shoot. It is easy to get in the habit of just shooting what your told to shoot and getting the hell out but I am a firm believer that if you think hard enough you can come away with something interesting for yourself. This was the subjects husband. He was a retired life long farmer and he walked in wearing beat up overalls, John Deer hat and a torn flannel at 9am. I immidiately knew I wanted to photograph him but he was pretty stone cold and I think he said maybe 5 words the entire shoot. At the end, I asked him if he wanted a portrait of him and his wife. He said yes and sat down on the bench in front of the lights. I shot a bunch of nice photos for the couple and then swooped in and made a few portraits of him. The whole thing wasn’t a ploy though, I plan on sending them the couples portrait, don’t worry.
****does anybody else feel like tumblr is sharpening their images???this is nothing like what it looks like on my desktop*****
