Some outtakes from a day I spent crawling around on my knees for the NYT photographing dual language immersion programs in Utah public schools. Kids are real funny to me.

Skull Valley, Utah for the NYT.

Skull Valley, Utah for the NYT.

Scientist Susan Meyer for the NYT in a story about invasive grass species in the West. I love being a photographer because it forces me to go places I would never have any reason to go. In this case, it was skull valley Utah. Unless you are part of the military weapons testing stuff or a crazed redneck, there really wouldn’t be a reason to go to Skull Valley. It was covered in cheatgrass which is an invasive grass species that originally came from Asia. Now, it’s EVERYWHERE and it sticks to EVERYTHING. As I laid down to get a shot from a low angle the subject, Susan Meyer simply asked “are you sure you want to do that?”. It was too late and I spent the next 4 days finding cheat grass in random places.

Philip Barlow a professor of religion at USU for the NYT. I was really excited to have my photos accompany a Jodi Kantor article yesterday in the times. She has done some of the best political reporting covering the Obamas over the last 5 or 6 years. The article about how the Mormon church has shaped Romney is definitely worth a read.

Bryce Clark for the New York Times.

Drove the 4.5 hours down to St. George late thursday night to crash at a friends house (thanks Kasia) so I could do a quick (45 min) portrait shoot in the morning of Bryce Clark for a story about Mitt Romney’s time as a Mormon bishop in Boston. It’s a great, in depth story in todays edition of the times. Definitely worth a read. Here is a link to the article written by Sheryl Gay Stohlberg. These are some out takes I liked from the shoot.

Not gonna lie. it feels good. Even if the photo isn’t awesome….
